Biography

Glaspell was born July 1, 1876, in Davenport, Iowa. Her parents were Elmer and Alice Keating Glaspell. She attended Drake University and recieved a Ph.B. in philosophy. She worked several jobs for newspapers, one of which in in Des Moines, Iowa. She married George Cram Cook in 1913 who was of a wealthy Davenport family (Ben-Zvi 333). In 1931 Glaspell was the second woman to win the Pulitzer Prize. She received this honor for her play "Alison's House" (Ben-Zvi 335). Glaspell died July 27, 1948 of pulmonary embolisim after a bout with cancer (Ben-Zvi 336).
